Proposing in Italy – 20 Locations for an Engagement to Remember
So, why propose in Italy?
A country where overzealous love declarations are the norm, Italy exudes passionate love and ardent romance like no other place in the world. From soon-to-be husbands publicly serenading their future brides on the eve of their weddings, to elaborate displays of affection, Italy is THE land of professing love. I mean does it come as a surprise that the tragic yet romantic love story of Romeo and Juliet was set in Italy??
So, without further ado, from the north to the south, here are the best places to propose in Italy!
PLEASE BE ADVISED: Always double check that the following locations are open and not under restoration before going.
Best places to propose in Venice
So, to kick off this tour of Italian proposal spots, it is no surprise we begin in none other than the most romantic city in Italy itself… magical Venice!
The birthplace of skirt-chasing Casanova, Venice is deeply rooted in stories of passion and desire. Past love affairs seemed to be chiseled into the very architecture itself! From its winding canals to its labyrinth of alleys, the romance this magical city vibrates will no doubt sweep your partner off their feet.
Here below are the best places to propose in Venice:
#1 Most Romantic Venice Proposal
– at the banks of Saint Mark’s Square at sunrise
If you’re low-key and prefer proposing discreetly (just the two of you), the banks right in front of the Doge’s Palace are just magical at sunrise. Yes, it may be early, but the delicate hues of pink that slowly appear from behind San Giorgio Island truly make for a breathtaking sunrise. Plus, with no one around, it will feel like you have the whole of Venice to yourselves.
Take a seat on the banks and calm your butterflies as you prepare to ask one of the most important questions of your life. I guarantee the ambience of the moment will no doubt be something the both of you will hold onto forever.
#2 Most Elegant Venice Proposal
– on a private gondola ride
As cliché as it might seem, there really is nothing like getting down on one knee whilst floating on the canals of Venice. Legends even say that a kiss from aboard a gondola whilst passing under the Bridge of Sighs seals love for eternity. A tad corny? – YES. But don’t we all desire a little Hallmark bliss for those precious core memories?!
Don’t be shy and discuss your plans with the golondier ahead of time – they are generally very helpful and more than happy to accommodate any special requests you may have.
#3 Most Picturesque Venice Proposal
– on the colorful island of Burano
If you’re looking for something a little more colorful, the island of Burano is the perfect place. With its vibrant pastels, wandering the island will feel like you’ve walked onto a painter’s palate. Have fun uncovering the many rainbow facades of the quaint island and take your time choosing the picture-perfect bench to pop the question at.
#4 Most Glamorous Venice Proposal
– at a masquerade ball during Carnival!
If you’re all about glamour or a fan of lavish parties, then the Venice Carnival is the perfect occasion. Impress your significant other with an invitation to one of Venice’s exclusive masquerade balls!
There are many a ball to choose from; the Ballo del Doge being the most exclusive. Most grands soirées take place in stunning Venetian palazzi and include outstanding live orchestras, pomp decor, state-of-the-art performances and gourmet dining.
Surprise your beloved with a mystery letter (they’ll think it’s part of the evening’s act) or catch them off guard as you kneel at the end of a dance. Proposing in complete costume and character will really make for a bold and glamorous proposal!
Best time for a Venice Proposal
– April to May
– September to October
– Carnival Season: February
Best places to propose in Rome
Second on our list, none other than the glorious Eternal City of Rome!
Dotted with impressive ancient ruins and draped in a history so rich it stirs the soul, anyone passing through Rome is inevitably pulled under its spell. As if the city has a spirit of its own, the architecture opens its doors to the past and lets you in on some of its most intimate secrets.
Proposing in Rome will feel as if time has stopped and you and your partner are the only two people in the city!
Here below are the best places to propose in Rome:
#5 Most Sophisticated Rome Proposal
– on a rooftop garden terrace at sunset
For a classy evening to remember, head to a wonderful rooftop garden at aperitivo hour and plan to pop the question while toasting to a beautiful sunset view.
The rooftop at NH Roma Fori Imperiali Hotel in my opinion has the most stunning view of all Roman rooftops (although if you prefer the Colosseum, you might want to look into The Court Cocktail Bar). Marvel at the view of the forum down below and enjoy the finest wine as you ask your beloved to marry you.
#6 Most Flashy Rome Proposal
– at the Trevi fountain at midnight
No post of best places to propose in Italy could be complete if we didn’t include the Trevi Fountain! And although it has become quite the popular Rome proposal spot, you can still get around crowds by going late at night or early in the morning.
Make it a midnight stroll under the moon (so romantic!) and wait out for the perfect moment to have the fountain all to yourselves. Perhaps get your partner to close their eyes as they make a wish whilst tossing in a coin. As they open their eyes surprise them on one knee with a heartfelt speech!
#7 Most Panoramic Rome Proposal
– on the Roman Forum terrace at sunset
If you’re looking for a spectacular view with fewer crowds, head to the Terrazza sul Foro behind Piazza del Campidoglio. Not many people venture here as most tourists don’t make it past the Capitoline Museums.
Prop yourselves up on the wall overlooking the forum and enjoy the beautiful sunset and panorama that unfolds below. This is one of the most romantic places in Italy to propose at!
#8 Most Spiritual Rome Proposal
– on a starry night at Ponte Sant’Angelo
Perhaps the most beautiful and well-preserved bridge in Rome, crossing Ponte Sant’Angelo with its ten angel statues (sculpted by none other than Bernini), is quite literally like taking a divine stroll through the heavens (no pun intended)! The bridge is particularly beautiful in the evening with stunning Castel Sant’Angelo lit up in the background.
Take your time soaking in Rome by-night and sink into the beauty that this celestial bridge has to offer. This is the best place to propose in Rome if you are spiritual (as Saint Peter’s can get excessively crowded).

Best places to propose in Tuscany
Third on our list of best places to propose in Italy, we find idyllic Tuscany – the epitome of lush country landscapes and slow-living.
Whether you enjoy unwinding with a full-bodied glass of wine or basking in the bliss of endless rolling hills, there is no other place than Tuscany to enjoy the simple pleasures of life. In a countryside setting this magical, your better half is bound to be raptured!
Here below are the best places to propose in Tuscany:
#9 Most Secluded Tuscany Proposal
– on a picnic in the countryside at sunset
For a completely private proposal, opt for an intimate picnic in the Tuscan Countryside. There are thousands of picturesque winding alleys you can wander around to find the perfect spot! My favorite location is right next to the Cypress Grove in the Val d’Orcia where the sun paints the sky with fiery oranges and the rolling hills seem to run on endlessly .
Grab your partner’s hand and slowly walk towards the horizon as you prepare for one of the most memorable moments of your life!
#10 Most Homely Tuscany Proposal
– in a vineyard after wine-tasting!
For wine enthusiasts, why not pop the question right after an enjoyable wine-tasting session? There are so many wine-tasting tours available; pick the one based on your budget, and of course palate!
I advise picking a wine tour that also offers a great panoramic view from the location or that allows for you to freely roam the grounds. Can you imagine putting-a-ring-on-it from amidst a valley of grapevines? I mean it just can’t get more romantically ITALIAN than that.
#11 Most Relaxing Tuscany Proposal
– while soaking in an infinity pool
If you love spoiling your loved one, why not book a fantastic spa day at one of the many top notch wellness resorts around Tuscany? We loved our time at Fonteverde Tuscan Resort!
Pamper your fiancé-to-be with a relaxing couple’s massage and unwind together in a regenerating steam bath before crowning the day with an unforgettable infinity pool proposal! The five-star treatment combined with the stunning view will certainly draw the happiest of tears!

At last, the gem you’ve all been waiting for… we finally get to the iconic Amalfi Coast!
From zipping on a vespa above Positano to sipping limoncello spritz from the island of Capri, the epitome of Italian style lies exclusively in the Amalfi Coast.
Whether you are eager to explore its stunning turquoise waters via boat or prefer lounging at one of its many trendy beach clubs, the Amalfi Coast is THE place for upscale living. With such sophistication, a five-star proposal is inevitable!
Here below are the best places to propose in the Amalfi Coast:
#12 Most Chic Amalfi Coast Proposal
– from a tower’s sea-view terrace at sunset
If you like getting dressed up, an aperitivo at one of the breathtaking towers along the Amalfi coastline is a must! With views of crystal-clear waters and an elegant setting for the works, this is one proposal that will leave your partner feeling like royalty.
Torre Normanna in Maiori offers its Cupid and Ulysses’ Table, a candelit experience right on the cliffside rocks – it’s the perfect place to propose floating right above the sea! Select the finest of wine bottles and enjoy your gourmet dinner as you wait for the perfect moment to propose under the stars. Make sure to book well in advance and inform the staff you are planning to propose!
Please Note! Picture above is Torre Cerniola which currently ONLY opens for catered events (I attended a wedding here.) Make sure the tower you are interested in is open to the public for table reservation, like for example Torre Normanna.
#13 Most Breathtaking Amalfi Coast Proposal
– on the infinity terrace in Ravello
If your partner likes being the center of attention, proposing on the terrace at Villa Cimbrone makes for the perfect choice. You’ll no doubt get a roaring applause from the onlooking crowd.
To start, roam the romantic gardens of the estate hand-in-hand (it’s very Bridgerton-esque)! Take your sweet time soaking in every color and fragrance before ending your tour on the panoramic infinity terrace. Move in for a warm embrace and surprise your beloved with an unexpected “will you marry me?”
#14 Most Classy Amalfi Coast Proposal
– on Positano beach or from a hotel balcony
For a quintessential Italy proposal, Positano offers a classic postcard moment!
Most grooms/brides choose the stunning beach in Positano as the romantic backdrop to their proposal. And while the beach is indeed quite remarkable, I personally find it to be packed with too many tourists.
For a classier proposal, I suggest proposing at none other than… your hotel room! Yes— you read that right, your hotel room! There are hundreds of luxury boutique accommodations around Positano that warrant exclusive and breathtaking sea-views from the likes of your very own private balcony. We stayed at Hotel Reginella and absolutely L-O-V-E-D it!
Either wake your fiancé-to-be with a wonderful sea-view breakfast or surprise them with a romantic evening toast on the balcony; either way you are bound to leave them speechless!
#15 Most Intimate Amalfi Coast Proposal
– on a private boat tour around Capri
Set sail on a private boat tour of the stunning island of Capri and perhaps include a visit to its electrifying blue grotto! Getting engaged sea-side is living ‘la dolce vita’ to its core!
Have a flirtatious afternoon together jumping in and out of the open sea (think Mammamia vibes), before picking a quiet spot to propose at. When your partner comes back aboard, surprise them with a profound kiss followed by a moving marriage proposal.

From a glistening spectrum of a thousand emeralds, why not propose directly from the center of Lago di Braies?!With marvelous Croda del Becco peak in the background, you couldn’t get a more impressive surrounding scenery to accompany you if you tried. Plus, rowing a boat for your one true love… it’s like a scene torn from the pages of the Notebook! (And we all love a whirlwind romance, right!?)
You can opt to rent a boat for 30 or 60 minutes. I suggest going for the full hour to allow for enough time to fully sink into the moment. Have fun rowing and taking in the many different viewpoints before settling in on the perfect spot to offer your heart.

TIPS for a Proposal in Italy
Proposing in Italy can be tricky if you don’t take certain things into consideration. Here are a few crucial things to know or plan beforehand:
- Check out the location you’ve chosen BEFORE actually proposing.
Pictures can sometimes be deceiving – the landmark you’ve chosen could be under restoration, the restaurant you wanted to book is closed for holiday, or maybe the location is just not what you expected. Physically go to the location you’ve chosen at the time you plan to propose. If it doesn’t align to your vision don’t sweat it – you have the rest of the trip to plan an alternate. But don’t wing this – this is supposed to be one of the most memorable days of your life!
- Know whether your partner prefers a public proposal or a small quiet gesture
You don’t want this important moment to leave your beloved feeling embarrassed, or worse, uneasy to respond. Make sure you plan something that they will not only remember for years to come, but makes them feel comfortable! Many of the places listed in this post can have quite a few tourists lingering— choose accordingly based on your partner’s inclinations!
- Which month you propose in Italy matters!
Don’t make the mistake and travel to your proposal spot without knowing when it’s best to visit! For example, the Amalfi Coast in November is pretty much deserted with most venues closed for the season. Or if you’re eager to see the rolling the hills of Tuscany, you won’t see them in the summer! I can’t stress this enough – please research the best season (according to the city you’ve chosen) before booking your flights!
So, there it is guys… the 20 best places to propose in Italy! Each one more magical than the next. I know that choosing where to propose in Italy can be incredibly distressing. It is my deepest hope you find clarity and inspiration after reading this post!
