If you landed on this page, chances are you’ve been downright spellbound by the magnificent alpine scenery that unfolds along the famous Lago di Braies hike.
And you might be wondering… is Lago di Braies worth it or is it just another overhyped viral destination that will once again let down?
I can confidently and emphatically relay that Lago di Braies IS INDEED WORTH IT!
In fact, I would say it is one of ten bucket list places you absolutely can’t miss when in the Dolomites!
When I visited, I was quite literally held captive by its glimmering spectrum of emeralds. With its massive Seekhofel peak in the background staring fixedly back at me, my gaze could only be broken by the dance of a thousand mirrored reflections.
So, what’s the catch?
Given its buzzworthiness, a hike around Lake Braies also comes with its fair share of crowds. But don’t fret… just because Lago di Braies is a busy hub for tourism nowadays, doesn’t mean you can’t have an amazing experience (with few tourists) as well! If you plan accordingly, you can still have a most memorable day!
Down below you’ll find everything you need to know about the Lago di Braies hike. From traffic restrictions getting there, to practical tips for avoiding crowds, this post covers it all!
This post ONLY covers the 3.6-kilometer loop trail that circumnavigates Lago di Braies. It is an extremely easy hike, suitable for children as young as three years of age.
* There are many other Lago di Braies hiking trails, including the famous Alta Via 1, a 150 km hut-to-hut hike. This post does not cover any of those.*

Best Time of year for the Lago di Braies Hike
So, before we get into the details, it’s important to consider what type of experience you’re going for. Based on your inclinations, the best time to visit Lago di Braies may differ.
Here are the best seasons to visit according to your needs:
Summer
If you’re traveling with kids and don’t want to deal with chillier temperatures, summer is the best season to visit Lago di Braies. You won’t have to worry about shivering your way through the boat ride and the weather is decent enough for a nice warm picnic.
Crowds however CAN be a real nuisance this season. I’m talking HORDES of people starting from as early as 8AM (not to mention the whole parking hassle which I get into later). You can alleviate this stress by avoiding the super peak months of July and August.
For a more peaceful experience (while maintaining decent weather) consider embarking on the Lago di Braies hike in June or early September. We’ve been in June, July, and early September and trust me when I say that visiting in July was more akin to a chaotic Disneyland experience.
If you absolutely can only visit in peak months, that’s ok – you can still have a memorable time! Try heading out to the lake early in the morning (7AM – 8AM at the latest) or during the afternoon when tourist buses and families have already left.
BEST MONTHS: June & September
Spring & Fall
If crowds scare you or you’re really looking to get in some good photography, spring and fall are the best choices. Weather can be quite unpredictable and temperatures nippy, but the colors you get, especially in autumn are quite remarkable.
Note that the lake’s water level is at its lowest in the fall. It will be smaller in size, but the warm-colored foliage contrasted with the cool sky-greys nevertheless rewards with a breathtaking landscape.
Winter
Lake Braies usually starts to freeze in late fall and doesn’t thaw well into spring. If you’re coming to see the lake, there won’t be one to see in winter! Plus, the loop trail can become inaccessible/imprudent to walk due to snow and mud – not to mention below zero temperatures! I would avoid visiting Lago di Braies in the winter!
WANT TO SEE A WINTER WONDERLAND? Opt for Lago di Carezza instead. In December it hosts a magical Christmas Market along its snowy forest trail!
What to Wear on the Lago di Braies Hike?
If you’re a seasoned hiker, you’ll know that layering is the number one rule when it comes to hiking in the mountains. It doesn’t matter whether its summer or its scorching out, you always have to have warm clothing and rainwear in your backpack.
A few ESSENTIAL ITEMS to have with you on the Lago di Braies hike are:
- Poncho – Don’t underestimate this! Even if rain isn’t in the forecast, weather in the Dolomites can change quickly. Have a nice packable one in your backpack at all times.
- Windbreaker – Wind can pick up quite suddenly and it can honestly ruin your experience – especially if you’re in the middle of trying to row a boat in an open lake. Get a rain resistant wind jacket that you can easily pack into your backpack.
- Fleece Jacket – you’ll quickly notice that temperatures drop significantly when clouds move in. Make sure you have a nice zip-up fleece jacket to warm up.
*According to the month you will be visiting in, heavier layers may be needed (including thermal wear). See temperature table below.
LAGO DI BRAIES WEATHER (months excluded when lake frozen) :
Month | Temp: High/Low |
May | 10°C (50°F) / 0°C (32°F) |
June | 15°C (59°F) / 4°C (40°F) |
July | 17°C (63°F) / 6°C (43°F) |
August | 17°C (63°F) / 7°C (45°F) |
September | 13°C (55°F) / 3°C (37°F) |

How to get to Lago di Braies
Lago di Braies (Pragser Wildsee in German) is located in the Dolomites in the region of Trentino Alto Adige in north-eastern Italy. More specifically, it is located in the Fanes – Senes – Braies Nature Park in Val Pusteria at the foot of the imponent Croda del Becco (Seekofel) mountain peak.
Signs leading to Lago di Braies are straightforward and abundant (given its noteworthiness). Although the lake is easily accessible, there are a few road restrictions you MUST know about to plan accordingly.
Lago di Braies Access & Road Restrictions
Each year during the peak months of July, August, and September, the road leading up to Braies Lake becomes accessible between the hours of 9AM and 4PM ONLY to those that have a prebooked parking space at the lake. (*If your accommodation is located in the Braies Valley/Valle di Braies, you should be given a transit permit that exempts you from this*). I repeat:
**To access Lago di Braies by car in summer during the hours 9AM-4PM, you must book a parking space at the lake in advance. If you don’t have a prebooked space, you will not be able to access the road leading to the lake!!**
If you plan to arrive before 9AM and/or leave after 4PM during peak months you can transit on the road without prebooking a parking space. (You might want to prebook anyway, just in case all spots are already reserved!)
See their official website for updated dates/times on road restrictions and for instructions on booking a parking space. *Online booking opens in June of each year.
Lago di Braies Parking
When it comes to parking at Lago di Braies, there are several paid options available near the lake – the closer the lot, the higher the parking fees.
Flat daily rates and hourly prices have been increasing each year but as a rough estimate I would say you should be prepared to spend anywhere between 8 and 20 euro depending on how close you park and how long you stay.
If there are no remaining available parking spots near the lake, you can head to the Segheria/Säge Parking Area 6 kilometers away. From here you’ll have to take a shuttle bus the remainder of the way (which you have to additionally pay for).
By Car
If you have a prebooked parking space (as discussed above), head directly to the parking lot you reserved at. For those that are visiting Lago di Braies outside of peak months, parking is on a first-come first-served basis.
Head to the lake by typing into your GPS “Pragser Wildsee.” Once at the lake, search for the closest or cheapest available parking spot.
Depending on where you’re coming from, directions to Lago di Braies will slightly differ.
Bolzano to Lago di Braies | 1 hr. 45-min drive via A22, SS12, and SS49
Cortina to Lago di Braies | 50-min drive via SS51, and SS49
Verona to Lago di Braies | 3hr+ drive via A22, SS12 and SS49
Venice (Mestre) to Lago di Braies | 3hr drive via SS13, SS51, and SS49
By Bus
If you’re relying on public transport to get to Lago di Braies, there is the 442 bus line which runs year-round every 30/60 minutes (depending on the time of year) from Dobbiaco and Villabassa. The bus lets you off a mere 50 meters from the Lago di Braies hike trailhead (slightly before the hotel).
During peak season (July-September) there is an additional bus, line 439, running every 30 minutes, between Monguelfo and Lago di Braies. Travel time from Monguelfo to Braies Lake is about 20 minutes.

Which way to do the Lago di Braies hike (Loop Trail)?
Before embarking on the Lago di Braies hike, you have to decide whether to take the trail in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction. Each time we visited, we hiked in a clockwise direction.
This is the best choice not only to go against the crowds, but to be one of the first people in line for boat rental (as the boat rental is the first point you encounter going clockwise.) *Obviously, you also have to arrive early to be one of the first people in line.*
GO CLOCKWISE FOR LESS CROWDS & SHORTER WAITING TIMES FOR BOATS!
Lago di Braies Hike (Loop Trail) – Directions
The Lago di Braies hike doesn’t require much direction – there is only one main path circumnavigating the entire lake so you can’t go wrong. Nevertheless, down below I’ve described a couple key moments you’ll encounter while walking around the lake in a clockwise direction.
From the parking area, head in the direction of the hotel and follow the signs towards the lake. Once you see the lake, follow the path circumnavigating it to your left.
As mentioned in the previous section, you will almost immediately come across the wooden boathouse. From here you can opt to rent a boat, or simply pause to take in the marvelous views of Croda del Becco peak. (This is the best photography spot of the entire loop trail!)
Upon returning from your boat-ride, continue on the loop trail in a clockwise direction. As you curve around to the eastern banks, you’ll find a great panorama point with several wooden benches you can stop at – this is another great spot for pictures!
Continuing on the path, you’ll soon find yourself directly across the Lago di Braies hotel. At this point the trail becomes a series of dirt steps you have to climb up and down from. They aren’t particularly steep, but you may need to help smaller children.
Once you come to the end of the steps, the path bends around to the south end of the lake where the shore opens up on a wide rocky beach. Here, you’ll find dozens of stacked stones that visitors over the years have gathered along the shore. At this point, the view of the lake is completely different with Croda del Becco peak soaring behind you. This is a great spot to lay out a blanket and picnic. Take a moment to enjoy the panorama and then continue on the path towards the western shore.
The trail on the western side is the easiest portion of the loop-hike and runs along the edges of a spruce forest. Right before you complete the loop, you’ll come across the famous Pragser Wildsee Chapel. Have fun exploring and soak in some last lake-views before proceeding back to the car park.
Lago di Braies Boat Rental – is it worth it?
I have to admit I didn’t rent a boat the first time I visited Lago di Braies. You know me… I tend to scorn all things cliché and as such, misjudged it as one of the most cringe-worthy tourist activities you could possibly choose to do while in the South Tyrol. But with all sincerity I have to say I was erroneously mistaken!
Renting a rowboat at Lago di Braies is absolutely worth the hype!
Why? Because more-so than on the loop-hike, you get a chance at unobstructed views away from crowds. It also happens to be the perfect photography spot as the scenery changes in every which way! Plus, to be honest, it’s quite fun! We had some of our best laughs while rowing as I couldn’t for the life of me paddle in a straight direction.
Plus, when are you ever going to find yourself in a rowboat in the middle of an alpine lake ever again? Trust me, this is a core memory you don’t want to miss out on! (If you’re planning on popping the question soon, it makes for one of the best proposal spots in Italy!)
How much does it cost to rent a boat at Lago di Braies?
So exactly how much does it cost to rent a rowboat in Lago di Braies? Generally speaking, boat rental prices and operating hours are as follows:
PRICES PER BOAT (Max 4 People)
30 minutes | 25€
60 minutes | 35€
OPENING HOURS
Late Spring – Early Summer | 9:00am – 5:00pm

Photography & Over Tourism
But what about those crowds???
So, as you probably know, Lago di Braies in the last decade or so, has gained a notoriety that attracts over a million visitors each year. From families to professional photographers, everyone wants a chance at seeing the pearl of the Dolomites!
But with notoriety comes complication. As Lago di Braies faces growing mass tourism year over year, the lake has adopted several measures to help regulate and keep over tourism in check. From limiting road access to prohibiting bathing, many rules have been put in place to lessen the “tourist footprint.”
But unfortunately, over tourism isn’t the only problem at Lago di Braies.
In the age of Instagram, where the number of likes seems to have become more important than life itself, hundreds of tourists go to great lengths for that “perfect photo”- including TRESPASSING.
To address the blatant overstepping of private property, the lake has established some ground rules when it comes to accessing the all-too photogenic wooden boathouse.
La Palafitta – Lago di Braies Boathouse
As mentioned above, because La Palafitta (the wooden boathouse at Lago di Braies) is private property, access is technically forbidden.
BUT!… Because it has become such a magnet for photographers, the Lake does allow access if you pay for a private photography session.
Booking a Photography Session at Lago di Braies
To book a photography session, visit the palafitta website and reserve online. For an hour and a half before opening, you’ll get exclusive access to the boathouse and two rowboats to shoot with. Price is 150 euro.
1.5 hr. shooting | 150€ | exclusive access + 2 rowboats
If you are on a budget – opt for renting a boat instead! You can still get spectacular photos from inside the boat itself.
Where to stay near Lago di Braies
Where you stay near Lago di Braies will depend on how long you are planning to stay in the area. If you’re just passing through for the day, then you might not need an accommodation in the vicinity. If, however, you are planning to stay several nights in Val Pusteria, then an accommodation next to the lake could be a good idea – especially if you have your heart set on a sunrise excursion.
Here below I’ve listed a few options according to budget and proximity. I haven’t personally stayed in all of them, but I only recommend hotels I thoroughly research and that I would book for myself as well.

After a full day of hiking enjoy a relaxing stay at this family-owned guesthouse. Each room comes with its own mountain-view patio and option for a delicious continental breakfast.
Lago di Braies Hike FAQ
Any last-minute inquiries? Here are the answers to some of the most common questions regarding the Lago di Braies hike:
Is there an entrance fee to visit Lago di Braies?
No, there is no entrance fee to visit Lago di Braies. Access is free; however, you will still have to pay for parking.
What are the Lago di Braies opening hours?
Lago di Braies doesn’t have opening hours – the lake is accessible at any time of day (you won’t find a guard or a gate). However, if you’re interested in renting a boat, see this website for updated operating hours.
Can you swim in Lago di Braies?
NO! Swimming is not allowed at Lago di Braies. You’ll find many online blogs stating the contrary, but that is absolutely incorrect. I repeat, swimming in Lago di Braies is prohibited!
“But there are no signs prohibiting it!” You’re right, there are no signs, and you might even encounter one or two people in the water – this doesn’t mean it’s okay! At maximum you can wet your feet as I did… trying your best not to disturb the lakebed (moving slowly, and only getting your toes in the water.) Please be responsible and set a good example by following the rules.
Can I use my paddle board on the lake?
No. You cannot use your own paddle board or boat in Lago di Braies. The only permitted water vessels on the lake are the boats you can rent on-site.
Is the Lago di Braies hike loop trail suitable for children?
Yes, I would say children starting from the age of 3 can complete this loop without too much assistance. Kids younger than that will need some help on the stairs or on the portions with uneven terrain. For toddlers I recommend using a baby carrier.
Is the loop trail stroller-friendly?
Not really. If you’re planning on completing the entire Lago di Braies circuit, I don’t recommend bringing a stroller. The eastern side of the lake has quite a few stairs you have to climb up and down which is not practical if you have a stroller.
Is boat rental available all-year round?
No, boat rental is only available from late May to early November. (The lake freezes over in the winter)! Check this site for updated dates and operating hours.
Are there restaurants and toilets on the hiking trail?
DINING | Yes, there are a couple places you can eat at. You can try Hotel Lago di Braies, the kiosk right next to it, or Emma’s Bistrot (next to the chapel). Bear in mind however, that food can be quite overpriced and crowds a nuisance in these places.
You can also eat at the Malga Foresta mountain hut, but it isn’t directly on the Lago di Braies hike. To dine here you’ll have to deviate from the loop trail and hike an extra 30/45 minutes following signs for hiking trail 19 from the south end of the lake.
*Please note that off-season (anytime outside of summer months), all of the restaurants listed above (including the hotel) might be closed. Always check beforehand if they are open.*
WHAT I SUGGEST: The best option if you’re solely embarking on the Lago di Braies loop trail is to bring a packed lunch. There are plenty of peaceful areas (away from crowds) along the banks of the river to lay out at and picnic at (there are also picnic tables)!
RESTROOMS| Yes, there are restrooms available in the various parking lots. Alternatively, if you’re dining at one of the restaurants discussed above, you can use their private restrooms.
Do you need hiking shoes for the Lago di Braies hike?
No. For the Lago di Braies loop trail, a good pair of sneakers is sufficient. If, however you will be embarking on other hikes around the lake (Croda del Becco, etc), then yes, hiking shoes or rather, hiking boots (that provide ankle support) are essential. For a full packing list see my post here.
Can I bring my dog with me on the boat?
Yes, small to medium sized dogs are allowed on the boats. Remember to always keep them leashed when walking on the trail.
Can you fly drones above Lago di Braies?
NO! Lago di Braies is part of the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage Site and as such is protected. Unless you have a permit or special flying permission, drones are prohibited. Please respect the rules – violators may be fined, and their devices confiscated!
Where do you get the best view of the lake?
The best views of Braies Lake with the Croda del Becco peak in the background are either from the northern banks of the lake or from the middle of the lake (from a rowboat). Either rent a boat for an unobstructed view from the water or set your tripod up behind the palafitta to capture the boathouse as well.
Are bicycles allowed on the Lago di Braies hike?
No, you cannot cycle on the Lago di Braies trail but there are numerous cycling routes in the area leading to the lake.
So, there it is guys… everything you need to know before heading out for the Lago di Braies hike!
An easy excursion that rewards with the most breathtaking views, this is one lake you can’t miss when in the Dolomites. If you have any further questions or would like to share your experience, please feel free to comment below or contact me.
